Transformer fires cause power outages in Carney

Jan 2023Published 3 Oct 2026

Multiple transformer fires were reported at the BGE station along Northwind Road in Carney at around 4 a.m. on 23 January 2023. Witnesses reported three or four loud booms, after which fire trucks and BGE vehicles arrived. Power was lost to several neighbourhoods in Carney and the Seven Courts community. Most outages were later reported as restored, though the source does not say when. BGE and the Baltimore County Fire Department had not stated a cause.

Not reported.

  1. Station operators should be ready to respond quickly when transformer equipment fails.
  2. Restoration claims should be checked with the operator before they are treated as complete.
  3. Where the cause is not yet known, public accounts should say so rather than infer a failure mode.
