Transformer explosion causes outage in Harrisburg, Dauphin County
Nov 2023Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
A transformer exploded overnight in the 1200 block of Paxton Street in Harrisburg, cutting power to part of Dauphin County, including UPMC Harrisburg Hospital. The hospital ran on a generator. A county spokesperson said a pickup truck hit a pole at about 10:45 on Saturday night. Officials said the transformer explosion caused the outage. The source does not state that the collision caused the explosion. Paxton Street stayed closed between 13th and 16th streets until Sunday morning. PPL was replacing the transformer early on Sunday.
Contributing factors
A pickup truck struck a utility pole in the same area shortly before the outage. The source does not say whether that strike damaged the transformer or caused it to explode.
Lessons learned
- Treat a nearby vehicle strike on a pole as a prompt to check associated equipment before assuming the outage cause.
- Keep tested backup power available at hospitals and other critical sites.
- Plan for prompt replacement of a failed transformer so a local outage is not extended.
