Fire at BGE Frederick Road substation leaves about 800 people without power

Apr 2024Published 2 Oct 2026

At about 9:45 p.m. on 15 April 2024, BGE said an equipment failure at the BGE Frederick Rd. substation caused a fire. BGE crews were on site when the equipment failed and notified the Baltimore County Fire Department, which attended. About 800 people were without power. BGE said its crews would remain on site to carry out repairs and restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.

BGE reported an equipment failure. The source does not describe the failed equipment or why it failed.

  1. When crews are already on site, they should be able to raise the alarm with the fire service at once.
  2. Notification arrangements with the local fire service should be clear before an equipment failure.
  3. Restoration should wait until damaged equipment can be worked on safely.
