Early on Wednesday 6 July 2022, a single-vehicle crash occurred in the 5500 block of Goldsboro Road near Radnor Road in Bethesda, Maryland. According to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue, a car struck a utility pole carrying a transformer. The impact caused a fire in the transformer and in the vehicle. One person was taken to hospital with injuries, and the source does not give their condition. Fire crews were on scene working to extinguish the transformer fire. The 5500 block was closed, and motorists were asked to use alternate routes because significant delays were expected.

Lessons learned
- Pole-mounted transformers close to roads are exposed to vehicle impact, so operators should assess crash protection such as bollards or increased setbacks at high-risk locations.
- Fire crews need rapid confirmation that the equipment has been isolated, because a damaged transformer can keep burning after a vehicle strike.
- Recording vehicle-strike events on asset registers helps operators target protection where impacts recur.
