Con Ed transformer flash causes brief Brooklyn outage

Dec 2023Published 1 Oct 2026

A high-voltage transformer failure occurred at a substation in the Vinegar Hill neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The failure caused a flash and smoke at the facility around midnight. The resulting outage lasted less than one-tenth of one second and affected New York City and the surrounding region as a voltage dip. Automatic breakers isolated the short-circuited transformer. Redundancy measures prevented wider disruption. The root cause remains under investigation.

  1. Automatic isolation systems can limit the duration and scope of electrical faults.
  2. Redundant transformer capacity helps maintain supply during single-unit failures.
  3. Even very brief voltage dips can be noticed by customers across interconnected networks.
