Fire reported in a Hechingen home with a Senec battery

What happened

In late August 2024, a fire broke out in the basement of a single-family home in Hechingen, in south-west Germany. The basement housed a Senec photovoltaic home storage unit. The fire service reported that the house was filled with smoke. After the fire was brought under control and the basement was ventilated with positive pressure, it was clear that an electricity storage unit had caught fire. No one was injured. Senec said the unit was an old model and that no new lithium iron phosphate replacement unit was involved. The cause was still under investigation.

The cause has not been established. Senec said the house was being renovated and that the work could have been a factor.

Lessons learned

1. Treat a fire in a room that contains home storage as possibly involving the battery until the unit has been identified.
2. Confirm which storage model was installed, because a replacement programme does not show that a later fire involved a replaced unit.
3. Record nearby renovation work as a possible factor, but do not treat it as the cause while the investigation is open.
