What happened

A fire broke out at the Bryan Texas Utilities substation on Enterprise Avenue on the Texas A&M campus in College Station after the new substation was activated for the first time. No construction workers were injured. College Station firefighters responded and extinguished the smoking equipment after it was determined that power had been cut to the substation, using a dry chemical extinguisher from a man-lift. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Contributing factors

The cause has not been reported. The fire followed the substation's first activation.

Lessons learned

Confirm that substation equipment is de-energised before crews approach it to fight a fire.
Treat first energisation as a period of heightened fire risk and keep evacuation and isolation arrangements ready.
