Wind turbine blade tip breaks and dangles in high winds near Tiverton

On the afternoon of 4 May 2018, the tip of one blade on a Huron Wind project turbine broke in high winds and was left dangling. The turbine is a 1.8 MW Vestas V80, near Bruce Power’s off-site visitors centre north of Tiverton. The five-turbine project was built in 2002 just off Bruce Road 20 and is listed as a limited partnership of TransCanada PipeLines and OMERS. Bruce Road 20 was closed to traffic and was expected to remain closed overnight, with inspection and repairs planned for the next morning once the wind died down. Environment Canada had warned of gusts of 90 to 100 km/h for Saugeen Shores and Kincardine that afternoon as a cold front moved through.
The damage was reported during high winds linked to a cold front. The turbine had not yet been inspected, so the precise failure mechanism was not established.
