Transformer explosion and fire at Tamil Nadu transmission substation

A transformer at a 400/230kV substation operated by Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (TANTRANSCO) at K R Thoppur, near Tharamangalam, exploded around 8.30am. Within minutes a major fire broke out, fuelled by the transformer oil. Substation staff alerted fire and rescue services, and five fire tenders from the Salem Steel Plant and Tharamangalam were deployed. It took more than three hours to bring the fire under control. No casualties were reported. The explosion and subsequent power cut affected areas in the district as well as the neighbouring Dharmapuri and Namakkal districts. Workers removed the damaged transformer and installed a replacement within hours, with power restored to all affected areas by 5pm the same day.

The fire was fuelled and prolonged by the oil contained within the transformer, a known characteristic of oil-filled transformer failures.
