Newly installed wind turbine collapses at Bronx commercial building

A wind turbine that had been installed only weeks earlier collapsed at a single-storey commercial building at 500 Baychester Avenue in the Bronx, New York. The falling structure smashed through an electronic billboard and struck a parked car at a busy intersection. The turbine was reported to have been installed between 11 and 13 December 2019, meaning it had been in place for under three weeks before failing. The city's Fire Department (FDNY) responded and said there were no injuries. The Department of Buildings sent inspectors to the site, who issued the property owner two violations, a full stop-work order and a vacate order, and required an engineer to be hired to remove the damaged billboard. The cause of the collapse was under investigation at the time of reporting.
