Wind turbine fire near Weatherford, Oklahoma sparks grass fire

On 28 March 2018, a wind turbine about two miles south of Weatherford, Oklahoma caught fire. Oklahoma Forestry Services reported that the turbine threw sparks to the ground, igniting a grass fire that grew to approximately five acres before it was contained. Eight fire engines responded to the scene. The cause of the turbine fire, the wind farm name and operator, any injuries and the extent of damage to the turbine were not reported.
Sparks falling from the burning turbine ignited grass at ground level. The condition of the vegetation and the cause of the turbine fire were not reported.
- Turbine fires can start secondary vegetation fires beneath and around the tower, so response planning should assume a ground fire as well as a fire at height.
