Transformer fire at AEP substation in St Joseph County, Indiana

A fire broke out at an American Electric Power (AEP) substation in Liberty Township, St Joseph County, Indiana, after a transformer tripped. The fire started in the early afternoon but crews could not approach immediately due to safety concerns, so AEP allowed the isolated transformer to burn while it prepared to de-energise it. Once power to the transformer was cut, fire crews were able to enter the site that evening and bring the fire under control. A section of the adjacent road was closed to traffic during the incident. Aside from the damaged transformer, the rest of the substation was unaffected. No injuries were reported, and Indiana Michigan Power stated that no customers lost power as a result of the fire.
