Northern Powergrid worker seriously injured in Huddersfield substation fire

A fire broke out at a high-voltage electrical substation on Market Street in Huddersfield at around 20:30 on a Saturday evening in March 2025. Emergency services, including West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Police, were called following reports of an explosion at the site, which is operated by Northern Powergrid. A member of Northern Powergrid staff working at the substation suffered serious burns and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with what police described as life-threatening injuries. Fire crews worked alongside police and Northern Powergrid personnel to tackle the blaze and secure the site. Northern Powergrid confirmed it was carrying out an investigation into the cause of the incident, and the Health and Safety Executive said it would also investigate.
