What happened
Firefighters and police were called to Wrightson Avenue, Bar Beach, just off Memorial Drive, shortly before 9am on Wednesday 30 December 2020 after reports of a fire involving solar panels. Crews extinguished the blaze but remained on scene. Traffic was obstructed and drivers were urged to avoid the area. The article states that the property suffered no structural damage. It also notes that Fire and Rescue NSW had earlier that year linked a Hunter house fire to a rising trend in fires related to solar panels, and that a fire investigation unit official said such blazes had increased five-fold since 2015. No injuries, cause or evacuation were reported in the source.

Lessons learned
- Rooftop solar fires can disrupt traffic and emergency access even when structural damage is limited, so responders and councils should plan for road closures near residential solar installations.
- Fire and Rescue NSW advises that solar systems be installed by licensed installers and professionally maintained to reduce fire risk.
- Owners and operators should keep records of installation and maintenance so that fire investigators can establish the cause of any solar-related blaze.
