What happened
Firefighters from Travis County Emergency Services District #1 responded to a house fire in Lago Vista, Texas, on a Thursday. Officials said the fire was caused by solar panels on the roof of the house. No one was injured. According to the district's Facebook page, a city worker saw smoke and flames coming from the roof and alerted the homeowner. ESD #1 serves Lago Vista, Jonestown, the Village of Point Venture and Sandy Creek.
Officials did not immediately return a request for comment the following day. The article cites a US Department of Energy website, which states that rooftop solar fires are generally caused by design flaws, component defects or faulty installation, and that arcs and hot spots can ignite nearby flammable material. The Department describes spontaneous bursting into flames of solar systems as an extremely rare occurrence.
Contributing factors
Officials did not give a detailed technical cause in the article. The article cites US Department of Energy guidance that design flaws, component defects and faulty installation generally cause rooftop solar fires, with electrical arcs and hot spots as the ignition mechanism. The cause of this specific fire has not been independently confirmed in the report.
Lessons learned
- Rooftop PV installations should have DC wiring, connectors and string junctions inspected at commissioning and periodically thereafter, with particular attention to arcing and hot spots.
- Installers should verify component compatibility and correct connector torque and installation practice, since faulty installation is a commonly cited cause of rooftop solar fires.
- Fire services and property responders should be trained to recognise rooftop PV hazards and isolate the array during an incident, as energised panels can continue to produce electrical hazards during a fire.
