What happened
A solar panel on the roof of a two-storey residence on Avenida Ronada in Newhall, California, caught fire at about 12:15 pm on Monday 17 October 2022, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A passer-by reported the fire. Fire crews responded and extinguished the flames relatively quickly. The panel was described as malfunctioning. The roof received minimal damage, and at the scene the fire appeared not to have spread into the home.
Firefighters used a ladder to reach the roof. At the time of publication, crews had closed the entrance to Avenida Ronada from Orchard Village Road. The source does not report any injuries or the cause of the malfunction.
Contributing factors
The source describes the solar panel as malfunctioning. The cause of the malfunction was not reported.
Lessons learned
- A fault in a rooftop solar panel can start a fire, so installations should be inspected after any sign of electrical or thermal faults.
- Householders should report any heat, smell or visible damage from panels at once, as early reporting and a rapid fire service response were reported to have limited damage in this case.
- Operators and installers should document the fault and its cause so that similar failures can be identified and prevented.
