What happened
The Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm in Denmark, rated at 160 MW, was reported by Recharge News on 4 June 2010 to have been inoperative since 28 May 2010. The article said a faulty transformer station had rendered the wind farm inoperative and that the parts needed to fix it were unlikely to arrive for several weeks. The article described the wind farm as trouble-prone. No injuries, fire or environmental release were reported. The article did not give the cause of the transformer fault, the equipment manufacturer or a restoration date.
Contributing factors
Not reported beyond the faulty transformer station. The article does not state the cause of the fault.
Lessons learned
- Keep critical spares for transformer and substation equipment on site, or secure fast supply agreements, because multi-week lead times extend outages.
- Track the fault history of offshore grid connection equipment, since repeated failures may point to a problem that needs engineering review.
- Reflect extended repair times for offshore assets, where access and parts are constrained, in availability and revenue forecasts.
