Lessons learned
- A substation explosion can cause a wide outage and secondary fires, so operators should plan for loss of supply and for fire at electrical equipment.
- Facilities that depend on power, such as care homes, should be identified in advance so that the network operator and emergency services can prioritise them during an outage.
- Overheating switchgear and transformers should be detected early through thermal monitoring and routine inspection, and fire service liaison and isolation procedures should be agreed in advance.
