What happened
A switchgear fire on a ground transformer on Highway 30, east of Carroll, Iowa, began shortly before noon on Monday 5 February 2024. The fire caused a power outage affecting 576 customers. According to the local broadcaster, the outage affected customers in the area for approximately 15 minutes, and all but two customers had their power fully restored by the time of reporting. The remaining businesses without power were expected to wait several hours, because crews needed to dismantle the damaged transformer and install replacement equipment before restoring supply. The source does not report injuries, the fire service response or the cause of the fire.
Contributing factors
The source does not state the cause of the fire. It reports only that the fire began in the switchgear on the ground transformer.
Lessons learned
- Inspect and maintain switchgear and connections on ground-mounted transformers, because a fire in switchgear can interrupt supply to hundreds of customers.
- Hold spare or rapidly deployable replacement equipment, since dismantling and installing a new transformer extended the outage for some businesses by several hours.
- Prepare customer communications for prolonged restorations, so businesses still without power know the expected timescale.
