Lessons learned
- Rooftop PV arrays should have clearly labelled DC isolators and up-to-date shutdown information available to fire crews, so that the array can be de-energised quickly during a fire.
- Building evacuation decisions for rooftop PV fires should account for the time needed to isolate the array and for the smoke plume that can be seen from a distance.
- Owners and operators of multi-storey buildings should include rooftop solar in fire risk assessments and in routine inspection of connectors, cabling and roof penetrations.
