What happened
At 11:52 pm on Monday 12 October 2026, an outage affected customers of Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) in Rochester. RPU officials said it followed an equipment failure at the utility's Cascade Creek Substation, in which insulation on a current transformer failed and created an electrical arc that damaged nearby equipment. According to RPU's power outage map, more than 7,000 customers were affected. Power was restored to all customers at around 4:30 am on Tuesday 13 October. The source does not report the state or country, any injuries, or any fire.
Contributing factors
RPU stated that insulation on a current transformer failed. The source does not say why the insulation failed. The arc damaged nearby equipment, which widened the impact beyond the failed component.
Lessons learned
- Insulation failure in a current transformer can produce an arc that damages adjacent switchgear, so operators may wish to review protection and inspection arrangements for these units.
- Outage maps can give operators a quick public count of affected customers during an incident.
- Restoration after a substation arc fault depends on how quickly replacement equipment and switching options can be brought into use, so operators may wish to check their contingency plans.
