What happened
According to a local news report published on 9 October 2026, a vegetation fire broke out at about 18:00 on Thursday 8 October 2026 near the Campo do Carrapato, beside Avenida Alberto Giovanini in the Bethânia district of Ipatinga, Minas Gerais. The report says the fire spread to the area of a substation operated by Cemig. Residents told the outlet that the city experienced five voltage fluctuations and blackouts between 18:00 and 19:30, and that several homes lost internet service.
Residents recorded video and photographs of the flames while the fire was still small. The cause of the fire and whether anyone was responsible had not been confirmed. Cemig had not released the extent of the damage at the time of reporting.
Contributing factors
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed. Residents told the outlet that no action was taken while the fire was small, and the report says the fire then spread from the surrounding vegetation to the substation area.
Lessons learned
- Vegetation clearance and firebreaks around substations reduce the risk that an external grass or scrub fire reaches switchgear and transformers.
- Rapid response to small vegetation fires near energy assets can prevent escalation into equipment damage.
- Operators should monitor sites for nearby fires and report outages and voltage disturbances quickly so that customers and emergency services are informed.
