What happened
On 25 April 2022, at about 08:30, a missile strike caused an explosion and fire at the traction power substation that supplies Krasne railway station in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine. The head of the Lviv Oblast Military Administration reported the incident on Telegram. State Emergency Service units attended and were still extinguishing the fire when the report was published. No information on casualties was available at that time. The administration said the missiles had been launched from the southeast and were likely fired from strategic aircraft. The same morning, the chairman of Ukrzaliznytsia said that five railway stations in central and western Ukraine had been fired on.
Contributing factors
The source attributes the explosion and fire to a missile strike during a nationwide air-raid alert. Air defence units were reported to have shot down a further missile over Lviv Oblast that morning. No technical fault or other contributing factor at the substation is reported.
Lessons learned
- Traction substations that supply railway stations are critical electrical assets, and operators should include them in emergency and continuity planning.
- Early reports may not yet give casualties, the extent of damage or the time needed to restore supply, so those points should be treated as unknown until confirmed.
- Firefighters attending a damaged or energised substation need agreed access and isolation arrangements in advance.
