Transformer fire causes power outage in Woodside, Queens

A transformer at 58th Street and Laurel Hill Boulevard in Woodside, Queens, caught fire around 2:30 a.m. and knocked out power to nearly 1,200 Con Edison customers. Neighbours said they heard an explosion before the outage. Some lights on the nearby Brooklyn Queens Expressway also went out. Con Edison restored power to the affected customers around 7 a.m. The cause was not reported, and authorities had begun an investigation.
