Explosion at Westerville substation leaves thousands without power

What happened

According to Westerville police, a transformer owned by Westerville Electric on the 700 block of McCorkle Boulevard in Westerville, Ohio, exploded at about 2.40 a.m. on 14 May 2024. The outage affected about 4,200 Westerville Electric customers. Smoke was seen from the substation area, and residents reported a loud boom and flashing lights. A separate pole fire on another network is not part of this entry. Three intersections on Maxtown Road were closed while crews investigated. Westerville Electric said most of its customers had power back by late Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported. The cause was not reported.
