EIR-1117

Provisional entry. Published from first reports. This entry is rechecked automatically and updated when more sources appear. Next update: 20 September 2026.

A transformer exploded shortly before noon at the intersection of Hoag Lane and Muirfield Drive in the town of Manlius, New York. The explosion caused a power outage affecting over 3,500 National Grid customers in and south of Manlius. A 911 caller reported losing power after hearing the explosion. Fayetteville-Manlius High School dismissed students early because of the outage. Manlius Police Department said a transformer failure caused the outage. National Grid estimated restoration by early afternoon, and by 2pm on the day of the incident power had been restored to all but a few remaining customers.

Police attributed the outage to a transformer failure. The underlying technical cause, the voltage level and the equipment age were not reported.

  1. A single distribution transformer failure can cut supply to thousands of customers within minutes.
  2. Sites that depend on grid supply, such as schools, benefit from pre-agreed plans for an unplanned loss of power.
  3. Publishing outage maps and estimated restoration times early helps affected customers plan around an unexpected loss of supply.
