What happened

A fire broke out at a PSEG Long Island substation in Bridgehampton on a Friday morning. The blaze started in a transformer vault at 1235 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike at 10:50 a.m. Firefighters arrived but could not immediately attack the fire because the transformer remained energized. Utility staff on site worked to isolate the power supply, a process that took at least fifteen minutes. Heavy black smoke was visible during this period. Once power was isolated, firefighters extinguished the flames quickly. The road was closed while the incident was dealt with. No customers lost supply as a result of the fire. The company stated that the cause was under investigation.
