A fire broke out at an electrical substation near an NCP car park on Greyfriars Road in Cardiff city centre, on Crockherbton Lane, just after noon. Crews were called at 12.35pm to what was initially described as a refuse fire. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the incident involved an external power substation and industrial bins, and that heavy smoke had logged a three storey adjacent building. Around 50 firefighters and officers attended, with eight fire engines, three water bowsers and two aerial bladders. Crews used breathing apparatus, hosereels, thermal cameras and an aerial ladder as an observation tower to check for fire spread. Greyfriars Road was closed and bus services were diverted.
