A transformer fire in the Richmond District of San Francisco caused an unplanned power outage affecting more than 11,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) customers on Sunday night. The fire was reported around 7:45 p.m. near 12th Avenue and Balboa Street. Fire officials said firefighters secured the scene until PG&E crews arrived. PG&E attributed the outage to an overhead equipment failure but did not provide further detail. The outage affected customers and some traffic signals in the Richmond District, Golden Gate Park and the Presidio until around 11 p.m. The incident occurred as PG&E was preparing to restore grid power to about 6,000 customers in the same area who had relied on temporary generators since the prior week, following a larger outage that began 20 December and affected 130,000 customers citywide at its peak.
