What happened

A fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon on one wind turbine at the Ngong Wind Power Station in Kajiado County, Kenya, operated by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). The affected 0.85MW turbine was offline for scheduled routine maintenance at the time. KenGen confirmed that no personnel were injured, with all site staff accounted for thanks to established safety protocols and a prompt response from the on-site emergency team. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3pm, was isolated to the single turbine and did not affect the remaining units at the 25.5MW facility, which continued to operate normally with no interruption to electricity supply to the national grid.

Footage of the fire circulated widely on social media. KenGen's safety team has begun an investigation, working with relevant safety and regulatory authorities, to determine the cause, assess damage and identify corrective measures.

Contributing factors

The turbine was offline for scheduled routine maintenance at the time the fire occurred; no further contributing factors have been reported.

Lessons learned
