What happened
At about 13:00 on New Year's Day 2026 a fire broke out in the nacelle, the machine house, of a wind turbine at Süttorf near Neetze in the Lüneburg district of Lower Saxony, Germany. The turbine is about 100 metres high and more than 20 years old. The Ostheide volunteer fire brigade could not reach the fire at that height and did not attempt extinguishing. Crews cordoned off the area and monitored the burning nacelle for several hours. Burning parts fell onto a field below, but wet weather and saturated ground prevented further fires. No injuries were reported. The fire service said it could not yet give a cause.
Contributing factors
Not reported. The cause remained unknown at the time of publication.
Lessons learned
- Operators of older turbines should agree in advance with local fire services on cordon, monitoring and debris-zone procedures, because ground crews may be unable to reach a nacelle fire.
- Nacelle fire detection, alarms to a remote control centre and automatic shutdown should be verified as working and maintained on all turbines, particularly ageing ones.
- Risk assessments should identify the fire spread hazard from falling burning debris onto surrounding land and set out how it is managed.
