Fire reported at Lake Mariner data centre in Somerset

2026Published 3 Oct 2026

A resident writing in the Buffalo News reported a recent fire at the Lake Mariner Data Center in Somerset, New York, on the site of a former coal-fired power plant where TeraWulf is developing an artificial intelligence project. The column said the fire added to existing local concerns. The date, the equipment involved, any injuries and the scale of damage were not reported.

Not reported. The column raised questions about stored chemicals, water supply and fire service readiness, but those points are one writer's account and have not been confirmed.

  1. Treat an early community report of a data centre fire as a prompt to confirm the facts, not as a completed investigation.
  2. Share what is known about the fire, the equipment involved and any remaining hazard with the local fire service and residents.
  3. Check that emergency plans cover the electrical equipment on site and the water and kit the fire service may need.
