June 2026Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
On 5 June 2026 a fire broke out at the STT Global Data Centres India facility in New Delhi, which reporting describes as owned by ST Telemedia. The fire was reported to have caused extensive damage and to have made recovery of data and systems difficult. A cloud customer said it was struggling to recover more than two decades of operational and business data and that backups had not been restored about 20 days later.
Some intermittent Google Cloud disruptions in India were reported to be linked to the fire. The cause was not clear. Delhi fire authorities were reported as saying the fire broke out in lithium battery units.
Contributing factors
The cause has not been established. Fire authorities were reported as saying the fire broke out in lithium battery units, which can produce intense chemical fires that are hard to extinguish.
Lessons learned
- Keep independent off-site backups so a fire at one facility does not leave customer data unrestored.
- Check that fire response arrangements suit lithium battery rooms in data centres.
- Tell customers early and clearly when recovery will take longer than a normal restore.
