June 2024Published 1 Oct 2026
What happened
On 11 June 2024, a fire was reported at a substation in Mandola, near the Loni border at Ghaziabad, and several parts of Delhi lost power for part of the afternoon, including central government buildings. Power Grid said power flow at the 220 kV Mandola substation of Delhi Transco, which it maintains, was briefly disrupted at 2.10 pm because of technical problems. It said flow was about 1,200 MW at the time and about 1,350 MW after restoration between 2.50 pm and 3.22 pm. No injuries were reported.
Contributing factors
The cause has not been established. An official was reported as saying that high daytime demand, together with intense heat, could have been behind the fire. Power Grid described the disruption as due to technical problems.
Lessons learned
- Rapid fault identification can shorten restoration after a transmission outage.
- High demand and heat are recurring stresses on substations and warrant cooling and load monitoring.
- A fault at a cross-border supply point can interrupt power across a wide urban area.
