Explosion at Jebba substation disturbs national grid

What happened

The Transmission Company of Nigeria said the bus section of a current transformer exploded at the 330 kV Jebba Transmission Sub-station in Niger State. The protection system opened the busbars, which the company said curtailed the explosion and prevented a fire and further damage to adjacent equipment. The trip caused a temporary disturbance on the national grid. Engineers isolated the faulty current transformer, reconfigured the busbar arrangement and restored supply to the station and other parts of the grid.

Lessons learned

1. Protection systems should be maintained so that a fault is isolated quickly and does not escalate.
2. A failed item should be isolated, and the bus arrangement checked, before supply is restored.
3. A contained substation event can still disturb the wider grid, so restoration should be confirmed from the control centre as well as on site.
