Fire at high voltage substation in Gwinnett County

Firefighters from the Gwinnett County Fire Rescue Department responded to a fire at a high voltage substation around 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Crews found a large fire emitting heavy heat inside the substation perimeter, at a transformer. They established a protective perimeter and requested assistance from Georgia Power to address electrical hazards. Support arrived from the Hazardous Materials Team and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to monitor for environmental hazards. The fire was brought under control around 6:30 a.m. No injuries or significant power outages were reported. Georgia Power staff are investigating the cause and making repairs.

The cause had not been determined at the time of the report.

1. High-voltage substation fires require a protective perimeter and coordination with the network operator before and during firefighting.
