Transformer reported to have exploded at a sub-station in Corning

Aug 2026Published 1 Oct 2026

Early on Wednesday afternoon, 12 August 2026, a transformer was reported to have exploded at a sub-station in Corning, Iowa. County dispatch took a report of an explosion at the Industrial Park at 2248 Avenue of Industries. A witness told arriving authorities that a transformer had exploded in the power plant along Highway 34. No injuries were reported. Corning Fire Department and other local emergency services attended. The sheriff's office asked anyone without power through Southwest Iowa REC to contact the utility. It was not reported whether supply was interrupted, or what caused the explosion.

Not reported.

  1. Treat a reported explosion at a substation or power plant as a live electrical hazard until the equipment is isolated and made safe.
  2. Do not describe an outage until loss of supply is confirmed, and give affected people one clear contact route.
  3. Keep the first dispatch location and any witness description of the equipment separate, so a sub-station and a power plant are not later treated as the same fact.
