On a Sunday night in June 2017, an electrical transformer at the corner of Old Orchard Street and East Grand Avenue in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, exploded and caused a total blackout in the town, a popular summer destination. Video captured the moment of the explosion, with an audible electrical sizzle as the transformer malfunctioned. For about an hour the only lights visible were those of public safety vehicles blocking traffic. No one was hurt. Central Maine Power restored supply as quickly as it could. The cause has not been reported.
