Fire at NPCL 500MVA substation in Noida Sector 148, Greater Noida

Provisional entry. Confirmed: a fire at a 500MVA substation in Noida Sector 148 on 19 August 2020, tackled by about five to seven fire tenders, with supply reported to continue via an alternate line from Pali. A 500MVA electricity substation operated by NPCL in Noida Sector 148, Greater Noida, caught fire early on the morning of 19 August 2020, according to The Times of India. The facility was reported as a new, additional installation energised in October the previous year, feeding power to the 220kV substation in Sector 129; both substations serve sectors mostly around the Noida Expressway. Officials said about five to seven fire tenders were deployed from the morning to contain the blaze. The cause had not been established at the time of reporting, with initial observations said to point to a technical fault. The report stated that power supply would continue from the Sector 129 substation through a second, alternate line from Pali. Injuries, damage extent and restoration time were not reported.

  1. Redundant supply routes between substations can allow power to be maintained when one facility is taken out of service by fire.
  2. Early notification and deployment of multiple fire appliances helps limit spread to adjacent switchgear and transformers.
  3. Where a fire cause is recorded only as a suspected technical fault, operators should seek a formal root cause finding before drawing conclusions about the asset or its age.
