Wind turbine catches fire at Harvest Wind II in Michigan, cause unknown

A wind turbine at the Harvest Wind II wind farm, owned by Exelon Generation, caught fire shortly after 5pm on a Monday in Chandler Township, Huron County, Michigan. Black smoke was reported rising from the turbine and the fire appeared to be burning near the blades. Exelon Generation said first responders established a perimeter around the affected turbine and that the fire had since gone out, and that operators immediately de-energised the other Harvest Wind II turbines as a precautionary measure. The company said there were no injuries to the public or employees. Huron County's building and zoning director said an investigation and root cause analysis would take time as standard procedure, and that the county would become involved if the turbine needed to be repaired, rebuilt or replaced, with Exelon working with the self-zoned township's board and planning commission. A request for further information from the company was not immediately returned. The report also noted that an Exelon wind turbine collapsed in Oliver Township in 2016.
