Fire suppression fault closes Nordic Nasdaq for hours
Apr 2018Published 2 Oct 2026
What happened
A gas-based fire suppression system was triggered at the DigiPlex data centre in Väsby, about 30 km north of Stockholm, and took one data hall offline. There was no fire, and DigiPlex said no other customers were affected. Trading on Nasdaq Nordic was halted in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Reykjavik, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn and Vilnius, and Helsinki's exchange stayed closed until 4pm. The facility's backup did not take over at once, and connectivity was slow to return.
Contributing factors
A company spokesperson described the cause as an errant fire extinguisher system that led to connectivity issues. The backup system, which was expected to respond immediately, took some time to do so. The cause of that delay was still under investigation.
Lessons learned
- A fire suppression system can take a data hall offline even when there is no fire, so operators should plan for service interruption after a suppression trip.
- Backup systems expected to take over at once should be tested so a suppression event does not leave connectivity down for a prolonged period.
- A delayed failover should be investigated, and the findings used to improve the response.
