Self-installed solar panels cause townhouse fire in Chesapeake Beach

What happened

On 14 September 2026 at about 8:31 p.m., firefighters were sent to a reported house fire in the 8100 block of Moffat Run in Chesapeake Beach. Fire was found on the first and second floors, had extended up the exterior into the attic, and caused some fire, smoke and water damage to adjoining units. Automatic sprinklers activated on the second floor and limited further spread. About 65 firefighters contained the fire mainly to the first property. The cause was determined to be a self-installed solar panel system. No injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross assisted displaced occupants.
