On the evening of 22 September 2018, residents near the Woodman Close UK Power Networks site in Leighton Buzzard heard a loud bang and saw a flash, prompting a call to Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue at 22.17. Two pumps from Leighton Buzzard Community Fire Station attended and cordoned off the area to protect the public. Crews carried out a 360 degree inspection of the building with a thermal imaging camera and found no heat sources caused by fire. The fire service said some electrical insulation had failed and had tripped the site into its fail safe mode. Crews accessed risk information for the site, contacted UK Power Networks and handed the scene over for repair. UK Power Networks said engineers replaced a piece of equipment on overhead power lines which had developed a fault shortly before 11pm, with the repair completed by 4.17am on the Sunday. The company said no power supplies were affected. Casualties were not reported.
